More than just exceptional coffee
Founded by James Fisher in 2001, Clifton Coffee Company began its life servicing espresso machinery in the independent businesses of Bristol. As the reputation for service grew, so too did the demand for supply of coffee & equipment and so, just a couple of years later, when joined by Ed Buston, Clifton Coffee began wholesaling roasted coffees to the surrounding area, backed up with relatively unknown at the time‘barista training’ to support its wholesale customers.
As the company grew, a few key Bristol-based multi-site customers joined us – all of which we are still proud to serve today, 15 years later.
The Head Office expanded to include a large training facility – the first of its kind at the time, and many staff came on board to help continue developing the business further afield, again many of which still work with us today.
Fast forward to the 2013 and, confident in the growth & interest we were witnessing across the industry in improved coffee quality, we decided to invest in our own in-house production roastery to concentrate solely on sourcing, roasting and supplying the worlds finest specialty coffees. We embarked upon a journey as much for own interest as for our customers to deliver a program of coffee quality & education that would help drive the industry forward further still, and today we find ourselves at the forefront of the UK specialty coffee scene supplying many of the leading retailers from independent specialty coffee shops to michelin starred restaurants and 5-star hotel right across the UK.
And just as our offer of coffees has developed, so too has our range of espresso and filter brewing equipment. With a team of fully qualified engineers on the road, we are now proud suppliers of some of the world’s leading manufacturers including La Marzocco, La Spaziale, Victoria Arduino, Compak, Fetco & Hario.
The specialty coffee industry is evolving at an alarming rate and our thirst for knowledge has driven us to constantly re-evaluate how we think about espresso & filter coffee. Since our inception in 2001, we have been at the forefront of the Bristol cafe culture providing an unparalleled level of service and quality to wholesale and retail customers in the region. As we’ve grown, our range of espresso & filter coffees give us the option to tailor specific packages to suit each & every customer’s palate & budget.
Now roasting 4 days a week on a DIEDRICH CR-25, IR-12, IR-1 and Joper Sample roaster, we wholesale almost 75 tonnes a year of specialty coffee from our roastery focussing entirely on one thing & one thing only: taste.
Farms and Producers
We work with both the farmers directly and specialty coffee merchants and importers to ensure an ethical supply chain right back to source. We buy our green coffee purely on taste from some of the finest coffee farmers around the world – paying well above commodity market pricing and once we’ve cupped & agreed on a coffee – a lengthy process of sample roasting begins as we figure out the perfect roast profile to bring out sweetness, clarity, body and something that defines that coffees unique characteristics in the cup.
Roasting is the key stage in the chain from farm to cup where the qualities of the bean can either be shown, exemplified, muted or sadly lost for good. So for us – it’s about treating the green coffee with the utmost care & attention to detail to ensure that we show the characteristics that make that coffee great in the best possible way for the method on which they intend to be brewed.
Many roasters believe that there is simply one way to roast a given coffee – and that it may be suited to either filter or espresso brewing. However, our philosophy remains that any given coffee can be roasted a number of different of ways in order to bring out different qualities within that coffee that suit a particular brew method and so we are constantly developing both espresso and filter roast profiles of all the coffees we buy.
All the efforts we go to to ensure we buy and roast amazing coffee would be wasted without the right service model to back it up or the right equipment to brew it on. For that reason, we’ve invested heavily in building a team of 8 fully qualified engineers out on the road and we have fostered relationships with the finest espresso and filter equipment manufacturers in the world including La Marzocco, Victoria Arduino Marco, Mahlkoing, La Spaziale, Compak, Fetco & Hario
By putting together bespoke packages to suit all budgets, brewing parameters, water quality, no. of covers and of course, aesthetic design – we can ensure that our customers have the perfect solution for making the best quality coffee possible. But our relationship doesn’t end there: The coffee and machinery are only as good as the service & support to back those products up, which is why all of our delivery drivers are also trained engineers & barista trainers.
We work with baristas from award winning national chains, hotels, michelin starred restaurants and small independent specialty coffee shops to ensure they understand every step of the process from crop to cup about how best to prepare drinks – from optimum extraction temperatures and perfect brew ratios – to latte art and machine maintenance.
Our training and engineering departments are on hand 24/7 365 days per year to keep our customers in service brewing exceptional coffee with every cup.
